Home Decoration Board Selection: Comparing Blockboard, Plywood, and Veneer Panels

Issuing time:2020-07-13 00:00Author:LinYi BaitSource:LinYi Bait

Boards are an essential material in home decoration and interior construction. With the continuous innovation of board processing and manufacturing technologies, the variety of decorative and eco-friendly boards has increased significantly. While this provides consumers with more choices, it also creates confusion when selecting the most suitable material for different applications.

Among the many options available, blockboard, multilayer board (plywood), and veneer panels are the most commonly used decorative boards in residential and commercial decoration. Below is a brief but comprehensive introduction to these three types of boards.

1. Blockboard

Blockboard introduction for home decoration and furniture making

Blockboard is a composite board made of a solid wood core and surface panels on both sides. The core layer is composed of evenly arranged wood strips, usually selected from the same or similar wood species. To ensure stability and performance, the moisture content of the core wood is typically controlled between 6% and 12%. The width of each wood strip should not exceed three times its thickness, and defects such as large cracks or cavities are strictly avoided.

The surface panels are made of fine wood veneers. The side with better appearance and quality is referred to as the face panel, while the other side is called the back panel. Depending on usage requirements, the panels can be sanded on one side, both sides, or left unsanded. Minor repairs on the surface panel are allowed under certain standards.

Blockboard efficiently utilizes wood-processing residues, offering good nail-holding ability, moderate strength, and stable dimensions. It is widely used in furniture making, door panels, partitions, and interior decoration structures.

2. Multilayer Board (Plywood)

Multilayer board, commonly known as plywood, is manufactured by bonding multiple layers of thin wood veneers together, with the grain direction of each layer arranged perpendicular to the adjacent one. This cross-laminated structure significantly enhances its strength and dimensional stability.

Unlike blockboard, multilayer board is not limited to three layers, and each veneer layer has a uniform thickness. Due to its excellent mechanical performance, resistance to deformation, and strong load-bearing capacity, multilayer board is widely used in applications such as decorative base panels, cabinet carcasses, furniture back panels, and structural components.

Multilayer board is especially suitable for environments where stability and durability are required.

3. Veneer Panel

Veneer panel is primarily a decorative material designed to enhance visual appeal. It is typically composed of a decorative surface layer, a base paper or substrate layer, and a protective or finishing layer, all bonded together with environmentally friendly adhesives.

The surface of veneer panels features rich textures, natural wood grains, or modern patterns, making them ideal for wall decoration, furniture surfaces, and interior finishing. Veneer panels combine aesthetic beauty, design flexibility, and cost efficiency, and they play an important role in creating a refined and comfortable living space.

Conclusion

Each type of decorative board has its own unique structure, advantages, and suitable applications. Blockboard offers good workability and stability, multilayer board provides excellent strength and durability, while veneer panels focus on decorative performance and visual design.

Understanding the characteristics of these boards helps homeowners, designers, and builders make more informed decisions, ensuring both functional performance and aesthetic quality in home decoration projects.
